Edward Thompson's Home Page
Everyone has to have one these days, so here's mine.
I need to put this up top. Microsoft can't seem to find it at the bottom of my page and it qualifies me for the Microsoft SiteBuilder program.
This is my list of favorite locations, so that when I switch browsers/computers/locations, I can still get to my standard places. Before I started doing this, it seemed like I was rebuilding my favorites list at least once/month because of my flux in browsers, computers, etc. Also, it makes it easy for me to show friends where to find stuff when I'm on their computer.
On the internet, where do you start from? Here's a collection of starting points that I use.
One of the problems with all of the different search engines is that each have their own matching criteria format. For each search engine, you have to play with it to find out what format it wants (few keywords, lots of keywords, whether the engine automatically does plurals and other variations, whether it defaults to "or" logic or "and" logic, etc.) For example "increase productivity research" gets no hits on Open Text, but gets 150,307 hits on WebCrawler. So you have to get to know your search engine and what it likes for criteria. So far I haven't found a good multiple search engine, but the Internet Slueth isn't bad.
Deja News is one of my favorites. I've found answers to many of life's questions on Deja News. It indexes and searches all of the NetNews articles going back about a month (or clear back to March 1995!!! if you use the advanced options). I'm not affiliated with Deja News, just a satisfied user.

For General Web Searching, my favorite right now is Lycos.

Microsoft's All-In-One Search is extensive. The only bad thing is it's a slow page to get to. This is also the same as hitting the "Search" button in Internet Explorer.

A small test of ActiveX Objects. If you have Netscape or some other browser, this might not work
Right now my favorite online place to buy things is Ebay. My sister got me started with Ebay by telling me the story of her first sale. She put two Beanie Babies up for sale, ended up with $125 after the auction and she was hooked. She said she felt like she could auction off the entire house. So I started playing with it. I've found their system to be sensible and I've been bidding on things a couple times per week.
A couple of other places that I have done business with:
If you are going to buy something over the net, I highly recommend that you check here first:
Here's some places I use for comparison shopping for PC related purchases
Still not bored enough? I've added a second page of favorites.
